Overcome Jiu Jitsu Pinnacle FAQS

Frequently asked questions

What is Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ)?

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling martial art focused on ground fighting, submissions (chokes & joint locks), and positional control. It prioritizes leverage, technique, and strategy over strength—enabling a smaller person to defend against larger opponents. Great for fitness, confidence, and mental toughness. At Overcome Pinnacle, we strive to teach in an enjoyable and supportive environment

Is BJJ safe for children? How do you prevent injuries?

Yes, BJJ is one of the safest martial arts for kids because it focuses on grappling and control without striking. We prioritize safety with close supervision, proper technique instruction, mandatory tapping, and clean mats. Additionally, our professors and coaches work hard to match kids with appropriate training partners.

How often should my child train, and how long are classes?

We recommend 2–3 classes per week for steady progress and fun without burnout. Youth classes are typically 45–60 minutes depending on age of the student.

Are you an EFA approved service provider?

We are an approved EFA vendor. Eligible families may utilize their Education Freedom Account funds to enroll their children in our programs.

Is BJJ suitable for all ages and fitness levels?

Yes! We welcome everyone—from kids to seniors, beginners to advanced. No experience needed.   BJJ builds strength, cardio, and flexibility as you train. Many beginners start “out of shape” and see improvements quickly.

What if I'm older or have past injuries?

BJJ is perfect for all ages.  We adapt for individual needs, focus on longevity, and encourage communication about any limitations.  There are many adult students that continue to find training enjoyable into their older years.

How long does it take for an adult to get good or earn a blue belt?

Progress varies by consistency and dedication—most dedicated beginners earn a blue belt in one year with regular training. It’s about personal growth, not rushing. Tapping is learning, and our supportive community helps everyone improve steadily.

What should I expect in my first class?

Expect a welcoming, low-pressure experience: gym tour, warm-up, basic techniques, and light drills. No sparring until you are ready. Wear comfortable athletic clothes—we provide loaner gis for trial classes.

Do you offer trial classes or intro deals?

Yes! Free trial class for new youth and adult students.

What are your safety and hygiene protocols?

Safety first: We require clean gear, trimmed nails, and proper hygiene. Mats are kept clean, and we emphasize correct technique to prevent injury.

What is the gym etiquette?

Respect is essential: Bow/shake hands, listen during instruction, tap early, support partners, and leave ego at the door. We are all here to learn and grow together.

How often should I train as a beginner?

Most beginners thrive with 2–3 classes per week to retain techniques and build habits without overwhelming schedules. Consistency matters more than frequency—many see great results training twice weekly, and you can add more as you get hooked!

Is there a beginner-specific class or program?

Every adult membership includes a 30-week beginner curriculum thoughtfully designed to help you build a strong foundation in Jiu-Jitsu. Rather than throwing you into regular classes and expecting you to figure things out, we provide a clear, structured path that develops your skills, confidence, and comfort on the mats—one step at a time.

Do you offer women's-only or mixed-gender classes?

We offer both. Women can choose mixed-gender classes, women-only classes, or train in both—whatever feels most comfortable.

What is the uniform policy?

We proudly promote a unified look on the mats to foster a strong sense of team identity. When everyone trains in similar gear, it creates a cohesive environment that emphasizes community.

Gi classes:

  • Preferred option: All students are encouraged to wear the official Overcome Pinnacle  gi for the best representation of our team spirit and tradition.
  • Alternative: You may purchase a non-academy white gi that is relatively plain. If you do, we kindly ask that you add an official Overcome Pinnacle patch (available through the academy) sewn in the appropriate location—please consult your professor for guidance on placement.

No-Gi classes: Overcome Pinnacle rash guard + Overcome Pinnacle shorts/leggings.

This keeps our No-Gi classes looking sharp and unified—reinforcing our team identity even without the gi.

What other gear do I need to start?

Do not forget your water bottle.   Some students feel more comfortable wearing mouthguards.  We provide loaner gis for trial classes.

  1. Our memberships include unlimited training, so members can attend as many eligible classes each week as they would like.
    Youth Membership: $179/month
    Adult Membership: $189/month
